Use Your Transferable Skills to Find a Job in Canada

Use Your Transferable Skills to Find a Job in Canada

Moving to Canada can often mean a change in career for new immigrants. When you first arrive in Canada, you may need to consider taking a job that is different from your previous one. In doing so, you should think about the skills that you’ve developed over time which can be applied to a job outside of your field. These skills are called “transferable skills.”

 What are Transferable Skills?

Transferable skills can be defined as skills developed in jobs, classes, projects, and through parenting, hobbies, and sports–virtually anything which can be transferred to another situation.

10 Common Transferable Skills:

  • Multi-tasking
  • Flexibility/Adaptability
  • Writing
  • Research
  • Organizational
  • Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving
  • Communication
  • Lifelong Learning
  • Project and People Management
  • Public Speaking

All of the above skills can be applied to numerous jobs and fields. In fact, an employer would not automatically connect them to education or a specific job, but rather think about how they fit within the context of the field, company, and position.

Communication skills, for example, acquired through networking, everyday interactions at school, work, or in public, prove that you are constantly adapting your style of conveying information. Your ability to communicate will come in handy in just about any work setting. Think about your verbal and written communication: how you address others, both individually and in group situations, face-to-face, over the phone, and by email. Presentations or talks that you have given in previous employment, at school, or as part of social groups are great examples to provide to potential employers.

It's important to identify, effectively communicate and manage your transferable skills so you can convince an employer that you're the right candidate for the job.

How to Identify Your Transferable Skills?

Taking the time to explore your transferable skills is an important part of your job search. Begin by reviewing your resume, projects, and academics. Think about things that you love to do, your qualities and specific work experience, and make a list of all the skills that you possess. Then, highlight your most common and unique skills.

Putting Your Transferable Skills to Work

Once you have a comprehensive list of your transferable skills, you’ll want to include these in your job search documents and materials: resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile. It's essential to keep these skills in mind when you are talking with work-related professionals, such as in networking situations and job interviews.

Understanding your transferable skills and matching them with a job you want will allow you to bridge the gap between the work you've done and the job you’ll have tomorrow.
