6 Summer Festivals in Alberta You Must Experience

6 Summer Festivals in Alberta You Must Experience

There is plenty to do in Alberta during the summer. Albertans love their outdoor gatherings. The province is home to some of the best festivals in Canada, from rodeos and fireworks displays to folk and fringe festivals. Alberta festivals and events attract visitors from all over the world and it's no wonder why; Edmonton is often referred to as Canada’s Festival City and Calgary's Stampede is known as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. Here are 6 of Alberta's must-attend festivals.

Edmonton International Street Performers Festival

The International Street Performers Festival has become one of Edmonton’s main attractions over its 26-year history. Also known as StreetFest, this 10-day event in downtown Edmonton includes over 1500 outdoor performances by jugglers, acrobats, hip hop dancers, sword swallowers, and musicians from around the world.

Calgary Stampede

Without question, Calgary is associated with the Stampede. First held in 1912, this 10-day extravaganza (July 7-16, 2017) celebrating rodeo, agriculture, and western and First Nations' history and culture, is one of the best things to check out in Calgary. There's an amazing atmosphere during the Stampede; it feels like a different city! You’ll see plenty of people wearing checkered shirts, cowboy hats, and boots. Most of them are ordinary Calgary residents or tourists, but you’ll also find real cowboys among them. The event opens with a loud and colorful parade through the streets of downtown, and some of the most popular events include the Stampede Rodeo and Grandstand shows. There are amazing music events as well, and unique foods to be enjoyed, depending on how brave you are: big pickle dogs, sticky toffee bug balls, bacon-wrapped corn, deep fried donut bacon cheeseburgers, and much more.

Lethbridge Wide Skies Music & Arts Festival

Known for its big prairie sky, Lethbridge is also home to multiple summer festivals, including the Wide Skies Music & Arts Festival. The outdoor festival, held July 26 & 27, has a focus on environmental sustainability, and brings together a diverse range of world-class musicians to a unique urban environment, featuring a handmade art market, food trucks and beer gardens.

CentreFest Red Deer Festival

CentreFest is central Alberta’s largest outdoor street performer festival. Taking place in downtown Red Deer on July 26 and 27, it features dancers, mimes, artists, clowns, magicians, musicians, puppeteers, snake charmers, tumblers, living statues, and comedians.

Cariwest Caribbean Arts Festival

Cariwest is one of Edmonton’s most colourful and vibrant festivals. Introduced more than 30 years ago, it attracts over 80,000 people. This year's festival takes place August 11-13 in downtown Edmonton and includes a parade on Jasper Avenue that displays the history, colours and passion of Caribbean culture, and a Costume Extravaganza and Caribbean Village in Churchill Square.

The importance of summer festivals in bringing together Alberta communities cannot be overemphasized. Go and visit Alberta’s best festivals and enjoy the summer with your family, friends, and loved ones!
